Hong Kong Free Press is providing support to the Journalism and Media Studies Centre at the University of Hong Kong to update and expand its ANTIELAB Research Data Archive.
The archive tracks statistics, arrests, artwork and terminology related to the 2019-2020 anti-extradition law demonstrations.
Included in the project:
- Database of protest arrests, criminal charges and injuries.
- Glossary of protest-related terminology.
- Timeline of the anti-extradition law controversy and protests.
- Map of protest events and demonstrations.
- Map detailing police tear gas deployments.
- Archive of 23,000 protest-related artwork and posters.
This is in addition to HKFP’s archives, including:
- Archive of explainers on the protest movement.
- Archive of 1,600 news pieces and features.
- Archive of thousands of photographs from the frontlines.
Protests erupted in June 2019 over a since-axed extradition bill. They escalated into sometimes violent displays of dissent against police behaviour, amid calls for democracy and anger over Beijing’s encroachment. Demonstrators demanded an independent probe into police conduct, amnesty for those arrested and a halt to the characterisation of protests as “riots.”
